Siberia is the second studio album by Lights. It was released on October 4, 2011 everywhere except Australia, where it was released on October 28.
Background[]
In making Siberia, Lights was excited to be making something different from her previous music. Once she established her new sound, she felt scared yet excited. These feelings encompass the meaning behind the album, as Siberia is a place that fascinates her[1].
In comparison with Lights' previous album The Listening, this album is more experimental and grittier, partially influenced from dubstep. Lights considers the song "Everybody Breaks a Glass" to be the most extreme example of this on the album. However, Lights didn't completely abandon her old sound, with the album including "poppier" moments as well[2]. One of the songs that Lights considers to represent the album the best is "Flux and Flow," since it is a mixture of "soft and hard" [3].
In addition, Lights believes this album to be more real than The Listening since all of the songs were made in live jam sessions rather than carefully constructed as they were with her debut album. Early songs from these jam sessions include the title track and "Flux and Flow," with the closing track "Day One" being the last nine minutes of the first jam session.
